What is a Metal Oxide Surge Arrester

Metal Oxide Surge Arrester (MOSA) is a highly efficient overvoltage protection device based on zinc oxide (ZnO) valve plates, mainly used to suppress lightning or operational overvoltage in power systems (such as substations, transmission lines or new energy stations). Its core is composed of ZnO valve plates with nonlinear resistance characteristics – it is in a high resistance state (extremely small leakage current) when working normally, but can be transformed into a low resistance state within nanoseconds when encountering overvoltage, quickly directing destructive surge energy into the earth, and then automatically restoring insulation, thereby protecting key facilities such as transformers and switchgear from damage.

Components of Metal Oxide Surge Arrester

ZnO Varistor Block: Non-linear volt-ampere characteristics (low resistance at high voltage, high resistance at low voltage), quickly absorb overvoltage energy. Silicone Rubber Housing: Modern mainstream, light weight, explosion-proof, resistant to dirt, suitable for harsh environments. Bracket/base: fix the lightning arrester and ensure the insulation distance to the ground. Disconnector (fault indication) :Mechanical/thermal type, automatically disconnects and marks when the arrester fails.

High-purity zinc oxide is used, the formula is optimized, and the surface is treated after the molding process and sintering process to prepare the electrode. The resistor is fully tested for DC reference voltage, leakage current and energy tolerance.

Vulcanization/Injection Molding

The process begins with the pre-assembled ZnO resistor column being placed into a precision mold. A two-component liquid silicone rubber is injected under pressure to encapsulate the core. The mold is then transferred to a heated press (150–180°C) for 10–20 minutes, where the silicone undergoes peroxide-initiated crosslinking, forming a dense, elastic structure.
